Summary

The unforgettable story of two unsung heroes of World War II: sisters Janny and Lien Brilleslijper who joined the Dutch Resistance, helped save dozen of lives, were captured by the Nazis, and ultimately survived the Holocaust。

Eight months after Germany’s invasion of Poland, the Nazis roll into The Netherlands, expanding their reign of brutality to the Dutch。 But by the Winter of 1943, resistance is growing。 Among those fighting their brutal Nazi occupiers are two Jewish sisters, Janny and Lien Brilleslijper from Amsterdam。 Risking arrest and death, the sisters help save others, sheltering them in a clandestine safehouse in the woods, they called “The High Nest。”

This secret refuge would become one of the most important Jewish safehouses in the country, serving as a hiding place and underground center for resistance partisans as well as artists condemned by Hitler。 From The High Nest, an underground web of artists arises, giving hope and light to those  living in terror in Holland as they begin to restore the dazzling pre-war life of Amsterdam and The Hague。

When the house and its occupants are eventually betrayed, the most terrifying time of the sisters' lives begins。 As Allied troops close in, the Brilleslijper family are rushed onto the last train to Auschwitz, along with Anne Frank and her family。 The journey will bring Janny and Lien close to Anne and her older sister Margot。 The days ahead will test the sisters beyond human imagination as they are stripped of everything but their courage, their resilience, and their love for each other。

Based on meticulous research and unprecedented access to the Brilleslijpers’ personal archives of memoirs and photos, Sisters of Auschwitz is a long-overdue homage to two young women’s heroism and moral bravery—and a reminder of the power each of us has to change the world。

I hate to say this, but this book was a DNF for me。 Rather than reading like historical fiction, this story read like a reference book。 There was just no emotion in the story and all the characters were very wooden。 I'm not sure if this is how the story was originally written, or if something was lost in translation。The one thing I can say is that this author did a phenomenal job on her research!

I would recommend everyone read this。 It offers a detailed insight into what the second world war was really like in the Netherlands from the perspective of its victims。 It also serves as a reminder that we need to be actively preventing anything like this from ever happening again at all costs。Riveting and heartbreaking read。

Told in the narrative, this book took a bit to really get into it。 But - once I really delved into the story, it was fascinating。 An added bonus was the informational synopsis with the birth and death dates and some biographic background of each character。

This is an absolutely, 100% true story about Janny and Lien Brilleslijper, two Jewish sisters who joined the Dutch Resistance to help save dozens of lives。 They did so by hiding them in a safe house in the woods called “The High Nest” and risked everything to save these people from certain death。 But as the house is found out, the second part of their survival begins at Auschwitz, where the sisters become close to Anne Frank and her sister Margot。 They nearly have everything taken away from them This is an absolutely, 100% true story about Janny and Lien Brilleslijper, two Jewish sisters who joined the Dutch Resistance to help save dozens of lives。 They did so by hiding them in a safe house in the woods called “The High Nest” and risked everything to save these people from certain death。 But as the house is found out, the second part of their survival begins at Auschwitz, where the sisters become close to Anne Frank and her sister Margot。 They nearly have everything taken away from them, except for each other, as they battle against the unimaginable and somehow manage to survive the Holocaust。 This book is so incredibly well done, you can tell the time and effort the author put in to researching and organizing all of the information she could find on the Brilleslijper sisters as well as the Nazi occupation and concentration camps。 This is a definite must-read for this year!! Thank you so much to Harper books for the free review copy! 。。。more

I learned new things about World War II and the Holocaust from this interesting book centered around two Jewish sisters。 Janny and Lien are living in Amsterdam when war starts and as the Nazi persecution of Jewish people picks up, they and their families go into hiding, finding a remote country home where they hope to stay through the end of the war。 But these sisters, their family, and their friends are not waiting for the war to end, they are active in the resistance and eventually several of I learned new things about World War II and the Holocaust from this interesting book centered around two Jewish sisters。 Janny and Lien are living in Amsterdam when war starts and as the Nazi persecution of Jewish people picks up, they and their families go into hiding, finding a remote country home where they hope to stay through the end of the war。 But these sisters, their family, and their friends are not waiting for the war to end, they are active in the resistance and eventually several of their group are caught by Nazis。 The sisters end up being transported to the infamous Auschwitz along with Anne Frank and her family。 Overall, this book made for fascinating reading, but I have to note that the writing felt uneven at times, although this may be because the book is a translation。 。。。more

This book was heartbreaking and inspiring。 The detailed research really shows。 It was so interesting to read about how these sisters interacted with Anne Frank and her family。 Highly recommended。

I would have enjoyed more information about the actions of the resistance。 I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves non fiction。 It takes you into world war 2 in a person way。 。。。more

Prachtig boek !

Great book。 👍 I will read this book more than once。

It was a great book。 I had a really hard time of making myself stop reading it so I can get stuff done。

I don’t know how to write a review that does justice to this book… Of course I know much about the war, being Dutch and having parents who were young kids during these years。 I was still shocked, and couldn’t stop reading。 I can totally recommend reading this book, not only to learn about history, but also since it’s just so good。

Mignon Wuestman

Well written, very well researched and another real-life jaw-dropping story from WW-II。 But while I agree these stories need to be told again and again, I personally was missing the new angle on a topic so often touched。Is the new angle: Jews also actively organised and resisted themselves; and not just were meek victims?

An amazing story of two incredibly brave sisters (along with many other brave people)。 Definitely reccomend。
